Assessment of Relationship in Infant Mental Health
Lee Kyung-Sook

Abstract
Relationship is one of the crucial factors affecting healthy growth and psychological well-being of infants. In the modern society, working mothers and the consequent development of child care organizations expose young children to more and more people other than their parents in their daily lives. However, the primary relationship for most young children is still the relationships between young children and their parents and between young children and their mothers. In the past 20 years, early relationship between parents and children have been viewed from a new perspective in foreign countries because of plenty of research on the significance of early relationship and negative results of neglected and abusive relationship. However, the importance of infant mental health was recognized very recently in Korea, and instruments for early assessment and diagnosis and prevention of infant problematic development are few. This study reviews the significance of relationship, a basic factor for healthy mental and psychological development of infants, and introduces DC: 0-3, a diagnosis classification of relational disorders used in domestic infant clinical treatment and research, and WMCI, an instrument to tap into internal working models of parents to assess their relations with their children.
